Check my mate! Chess sets costing up to £ 1,430 SELL OUT due to ‘global shortage’ fueled by Covid and fans of Netflix drama The Queen’s Gambit

  • Queen’s Gambit was released last year but has sparked an ongoing boom
  • Some sellers sold out and blamed the show’s popularity
  • New love for the game could see it get public funding and be classified as a sport

Netflix’s chess drama Queen’s Gambit has reportedly sparked a current global board game shortage – despite its release last year.

The Anya Taylor-Joy 2020 series told the story of prodigy Beth Harmon but seems to have made a lasting impression.

High-end vendors Regency Chess are running out of stock of its expensive breeding boards, simply explaining online “Sold out due to Queen’s Gambit.”

Even their cheaper products – which are on sale for £ 96.99 – aren’t available for the same reason.

Owner Julian Deverell said the show has increased demand five-fold.

He said, “The Queen’s Gambit knocked us out. It was like nothing else the company had ever known.

“Even now, we are having a hard time doing the sets,” he added to The Times.

Another well-respected salesperson, Purling London, said he was also inundated with customers following the program.

A spokesperson added: “We too have had a huge wave of interest around the show’s release.”

Dominic Lawson, president of the English Chess Federation, said he hoped the government sees the boom as a good reason to give it sports status and get public funding.

The boom was also reportedly encouraged by the three lockdowns Boris Johnson has plunged the country into over the past 18 months.

The super strict conditions of the former forbade people to leave their homes except for essential reasons.

This meant that they were forced to turn to more conventional ways of entertaining themselves away from pubs and other places.

Already, the English Chess Federation has doubled its number of active players, from 2,800 last year to 6,000.

And the Chess.com gaming platform has added an additional 22 million players to its roster.

What is the queen’s gambit move?

Queen’s Gambit is a move that plays a piece in an attempt to gain an advantage on the board.

He sees a set of moves that sacrifices a pawn to gain control of the center of the playing area.

If done correctly, it forces the opponent to spend the start of the game responding to your threats rather than developing theirs.

It is so called because it begins with the queen’s pawn rather than the king’s.

Movement is good to use to open up a game at the amateur or competitive level.

The Queen’s Gambit was awarded for the success of the game that rebooted before.

Celebrities, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, have also helped raise his profile.

Roy Lahood in the Michigan Journal of Economics said: “Chess, a game that has been around for nearly 1,500 years, is experiencing a rapid surge in popularity this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the release of a new series Netflix titled The Queen’s Gambit and the growing availability of educational resources for gamers of all skill levels.

The so-called ‘New Chess Boom’ describes the increase in viewership and the game of chess across the world from 2018 and picking up steam in March 2020 as people have been forced to look to Internet for more entertainment.

“Over time more and more people were watching and playing chess.”

The Queen’s Gambit was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2020, winning Golden Globes for Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance and Best Limited TV Series, Anthology Series or Made-for-Television Movie, between other rewards.

The seven-episode series was adapted from Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel and designed as a stand-alone limited series.
