You will have a much easier time winning at Tic Tac Toe if you play first; however, the odds decrease depending on how your opponent reacts to your first hit. In the best case :

  1. Assuming you are playing X, place the first mark in any corner.

As long as your opponent does not place their O in the center, continue to the next step.

  2. Now place your X in the opposite corner of the first.

It doesn’t matter which corner, as long as your opponent’s O is not between your marks.
Place your X in the remaining corner.

  3. Place your X in the remaining corner.

Any competent player will try to block your last shot. By placing your X in the last corner, you have guaranteed yourself two possible ways to win.

  4. Place your last X in the center of the board.

This assumes that the player again attempted to block your last move. Now you can win diagonally. If they put the O in the middle, you can secure a win on the sides.

What if your opponent places their X/O in the center? Play the trick using the same steps to cause at least one tie.

Best Tic Tac Toe Strategy Second

Winning Tic Tac Toe second is a bit trickier due to the huge advantage the first can provide if your opponent places their X/O in a corner. If they don’t, you can follow the strategy from the previous section to win; otherwise, you can instead cause a draw (or possibly win):

  1. Assuming you play O and your opponent has placed their X in the corner, place your O in the center.
  2. Your opponent will now attempt to secure a position in each corner, so you will respond by placing your O between their marks.

Depending on how the game unfolds, you can potentially win with this strategy or, at the very least, cause a tie. It’s usually the latter, but if your opponent is wrong, you can secure a win by getting three in a row in the middle of the board.
