Mr. Monopoly doesn’t need Chinese market, opens attraction in Hong Kong
A themed attraction based on the popular board game Monopoly is slated to open next week at Victoria Peak in Hong Kong.
Victoria Peak is a very affluent neighborhood, home to the two most expensive properties in the world. “The Peak is the most valuable land in the Hong Kong version of Monopoly… that’s why we chose this location to start,” said Gary Chan, COO of Monopoly Dreams. CNN Travel.
The new 20,000 square foot attraction is a collaboration between Hasbro – the owner of Monopoly – and Monopoly Dreams, a company formed to design and create the new Hong Kong attraction.
Visitors will be able to spend time in Mr. Monopoly‘s home and visit several themed areas within the 20,000 square foot attraction, including “The Bank” – where visitors can grab Monopoly coupons – and the ” Fortune Board “- where visitors spin a Ferris wheel to win prizes.
Released in 1935, Monopoly is the second best-selling board game, after chess, with over 275 million units sold worldwide. Yet the origins of the company had a less pro-capitalist message.
The Landlords Game had a first round very similar to the modern version of Monopoly, but also featured a crucial second round designed to teach “how fair monopolies can be.”
Parker Brothers bought Ms. Magic’s patent for $ 500, took out the second part of the game, and the rest is board game history.
