The Northern States Open Chess Championship ended this weekend with Fuenshak Othman emerging as the Open category winner, while Ikechkwu Ezeanya came second and Magomya Robert placed third.
Keyi Lucky won the blitz section, beating Magomya Robert who finished second and Olayinka Takeet who finished third. Precious Olurun Funsho became the best player in the championship.
Praise Ola placed first in the U-15 men’s category ahead of Damian Joshua in second place and Adima Eli Ankala in third place. The U-15 female category saw Dayo Shalom finish first, Deborah Yakubu second and Faith Ola.
After an outstanding display of skill by chess players from across the Northern States during the week-long tournament, the winners of the various categories returned home with mouth-watering prizes including medals, trophies and cash prizes. money.
Speaking shortly after the awards ceremony, the President of the Chess Federation of Nigeria, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Sani Mohammed (rtd) congratulated all the winners.
He said the federation under his leadership will prioritize developing the game from the ground up.
The President congratulated the championship sponsor Alhaji Ademola Alli, member of the board of directors and representative of the North West zone, while urging the other zone representatives to organize similar competitions in their different zones.
DIG Mohammed pledged to donate five chess boards and a chess clock to each of the nine schools that participated in the championship to encourage chess play in schools.
