Play Magnus Group and Mobile Premier League forge partnership for MPL Indian Chess Tour

Mobile Premier League (MPL) announced on Monday that it has partnered with Play Magnus Group to organize the Indian Chess Tour in the country.

The new MPL Indian Chess Tour will be hosted next year by Play Magnus Group (PMG), founded by world champion Magnus Carlsen, in partnership with esports giant MPL, according to a statement.

The tour, which features a $ 100,000 pot, will be the official circuit for Indian chess players to qualify and participate in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, he added.

“This means India will be the only chess nation with its own regional expansion that can secure players on the elite tour, which this year won a dazzling total prize of $ 1.6 million,” says the press release.

Seven Indian players competed in the 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour season, including Indian champion and number one sprint player Humpy Koneru, Grandmasters Vidit Gujrathi, Pentala Harikrishna and Baskaran Adhiban, as well as under-18 prodigies Praggnanandha , Gukesh D and Arjun Erigaisi.

“India is a rapidly growing market for chess and the MPL Indian Chess Tour is a fantastic opportunity for young Indian players to shine both on this new national circuit and on the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour world”, Andreas Thome , CEO of Play Magnus Group, mentioned.

Sai Srinivas, co-founder and CEO of MPL, said MPL’s goal is to grow the esports industry by making it more accessible and inclusive.

“This partnership with Play Magnus Group reinforces our commitment by bringing one of the world’s largest chess initiatives to India and making it known to the general public. We have a lot of talented players in the country and the MPL Indian Chess Tour will help provide them with a stage to show off their skills and also give them the opportunity to compete at an international level, ”he added.

India is experiencing a chess boom, with 49 of the country’s 69 grandmasters having achieved their titles since 2010.

Indian players also make up 25 percent of the squad of players at the Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour, an online tournament series launched by PMG with chess legends Judit Polgar and Vladimir Kramnik, which showcases emerging talent and promotes the gender equality in chess, the statement says.

They have won two of the three tournaments so far, earning them invitations to the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour World, he added.

The MPL Indian Chess Tour will consist of four online tournaments followed by a final where the winner will be crowned the 2022 MPL Indian Chess Tour Champion. Matches will be broadcast on chess24, chess24india and MPL’s YouTube and Facebook channels.

The MPL will host four qualifiers on its platform where each winner will receive entry to each tournament and face the top Indian GMs on the MPL Indian Chess Tour, according to the statement.

The winner of each tournament will receive an invitation to the multi-million dollar Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and an opportunity to play against the best chess players in the world, including world chess champion Magnus Carlsen. he adds.

“We are delighted to partner with MPL and bring this exciting tour to our immensely talented Indian chess players. India is the first country to have a national Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and MPL is our partner exclusive for the same, ”said Sunil Kamath, Regional Vice President (Aasia Pacific) at Play Magnus Group.
