Sethuraman (Elo 2644) had 7.5 runs in nine innings to emerge victorious on the basis of a better tie-break score after Russia’s Daniil Yuffa also finished level with the Indian player.
In the ninth and final round played late Thursday, Sethuraman defeated Hakobyan in a closed Catalan variation match.
Sethuraman, who was the first seed, went unbeaten through all nine rounds, winning six games and drawing three.
He finished strong, picking up victories in his last three rounds, including against fellow Indian NR Visakh and Armenian Aram Hakobyan.
“Thrilled to win Barcelona Open 2021,” he tweeted after the win.
Sethuraman gained 8.5 Elo points from the Triumph while Murali (Elo 2606) upped his by 6.4 points.
Sethuraman and Murali had drawn in the fifth round.
Murali won six games, drew two and lost to Hakobyan in the sixth round. He finished level on seven points with four others, including fellow Indian Aravindh Chithambaram, but clinched third place on the basis of a better tie-break score.
In the final round, Murali topped WGM R Vaishali in 30 moves.
Chithambaram took fifth place while Arjun Kalyan (6.5 points) finished ninth, followed by Visakh in 10th place after a handful of players finished with 6.5 points.
Indian international master NR Vignesh and Vaishali scored six points to finish 15th and 16th respectively.
