Viking Lands Mini-View, Plus “Tesla Force” and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

Hello dear readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade roundup for March 24, 2021. In today’s article, we have the usual news that we always have on Wednesdays. There’s also a mini-view of QUByte’s latest puzzle game Chess Knights: Viking Lands. We have a few new releases to watch, including the very cool Tesla-strength. Finally, we have the inbound and outbound sales listings that hurt our wallets and hearts so much. Let’s dig it!

Think Pink in This Week’s “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” Event

Is it Wednesday already? These weeks are going fast, my friends. As always, we have the details on the last event of the weekend at Super Smash Bros Ultimate. It will be a tournament event this time, and the focus is on the little pink puffball Kirby. Characters, objects and scenes from the Kirby games will be presented, and given that it is Smash Bros. we’re talking about is a lot to work with. The event kicks off on Friday and runs for the usual three days of the weekend.

Chess Knights: Viking Lands ($3.99)

I rather enjoy QUByte’s chess puzzle games, even though they are basically very similar to each other. The new puzzle packs suit me. Chess Knights: Viking Lands is conceptually quite familiar. You must use your knights to save other pieces on each level by moving to their spaces and bringing them back to the safe zone without enemy pieces catching you. Early games like this from the developer had a very simple layout, but the latest two added more intricate visual details. This one has perhaps the most beautiful graphics to date, evoking real battlefields. And yet, it ends up making it harder to read the board, especially in the darker stages. I also don’t really understand what’s going on with the button controls. Sometimes you have to push the stick in the opposite direction to where you want to go. Sometimes not. Touch controls were more reliable. It’s still a pretty fine puzzle game, but I think by trying to aim higher, the devs ended up getting less.

SwitchArcade Rating: 3/5

New releases

Tesla Force ($16.99)

Highlight of SwitchArcade!

10tons is back with what they do best: a superb top-down dual-stick shooter. Procedurally generated? Yes. Roguelite items? You know. Like in the developer’s latest Tesla-themed shooter, you can expect plenty of science gadgets and zappy weapons. There are plenty of perks to customize your character and plenty of Lovecraftian monsters to destroy. In addition to Nikola Tesla, you can also play as Marie Curie, HP Lovecraft or Mary Shelley. I cannot verify the historical accuracy of any of this, but I have to believe it is at least three quarters true. I can verify that this game is quite fun, though.

Hellbreachers ($4.99)

This is a retro-styled side-scrolling action game with fifty levels to play. There are three different characters to choose from and you can further customize them with various specializations. Some light RPG elements allow you to upgrade your abilities as you go. Reminds me a bit of games like goblin sword Where Sneaky Dungeon, and its price is about right for this level of appeal. It’s a bit rough in terms of hit detection, but all characters seem to have ranged attacks which should mitigate this somewhat. I don’t know, it doesn’t seem to do anything particularly interesting, but if you want something to snack on, it seems pretty fun for the price.

Golf Royale ($1.99)

Hello PixArts. What do you have for us this time? A cheap golf set that looks as fancy as its price suggests? Well, that’s not the worst thing we’ve seen from this developer. You have a little fox playing golf through a hundred stages of obstacles and tricky shots. This game cannot be played docked, which suggests you need to use touch controls. So what royal about that? Nothing, as far as I know. Just a way to grab attention with the title. Pix Arts is moving to Pix Arts.

(North American online store, US prices)

Although there are a good number of games in the inbox, there are only a few that really catch my eye. the excellent Picrossstyle game Murder in numbers is a great pickup for its full price, let alone half that. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted Hasn’t been on sale since launch I believe. The outbox is pretty thin and nothing in it really inspires me to get into song and dance, so I’ll leave it to you to check for yourself.
